Plainfield YMCA receives grant from Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board to support the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program
Plainfield, New Jersey – Plainfield YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, has received a $10,000 grant from the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board to support the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program. This evidence-based program helps individuals at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthier lifestyles by improving their diet, increasing physical activity, and achieving modest weight loss—key steps in reducing their chances of developing the disease.
“We are looking forward to expanding the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program into the Plainfield community,” said David M. Carcieri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater Somerset County YMCA. “Ensuring that all the communities we serve have access to preventive health programs is central to our mission. This generous grant from the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board will allow us to reach more individuals and empower them to take control of their health.”
Overlook Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, is committed to building healthier communities. This commitment extends beyond the exceptional health care delivered in our hospitals, physician offices and facilities. Understanding and supporting the needs of our local communities is a priority for Overlook Medical Center. The Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board, a group of individuals from throughout the communities served by the hospital, the hospital’s Community Health Advisory Committee and the Overlook Medical Center Community Health Department, working with the Atlantic Health System Planning Department, identified priority health needs within the community, using robust data analysis and a community stakeholder survey.
The Community Advisory Board awarded grants to 20 organizations whose initiatives address one or more of these priority health needs during the Winter 2025 grant period.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is fully recognized by the CDC and follows a 12-month format, including:
- 26 one-hour sessions delivered over the course of a year.
- Weekly and biweekly sessions in the first six months, followed by monthly sessions in the second six months to maintain progress.
- A dedicated lifestyle coach providing education and support.
- Progress reports sent to participants’ primary care physicians.
The program is open to all individuals who qualify, regardless of insurance status, and YMCA membership is not required to participate.
“We are honored to support the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program,” said Frank Macioce, Chair of the Overlook Medical Center Community Advisory Board. “By working together with organizations like Plainfield YMCA, we can make a true impact for the better in the lives of our community members.”
