Plainfield YMCA Reflects on a Year of Service, Growth, and Community Impact
Plainfield, NJ – December 13, 2024 – Plainfield YMCA, a proud branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, looks back on an inspiring year of impactful programs, community partnerships, and positive initiatives that have strengthened its connection to the Plainfield community.
Celebrating Service and Volunteerism: Plainfield YMCA hosted a successful Day of Service to promote volunteerism and community giving on Martin Luter King Jr., Day. Volunteers from local businesses, high schools, and the branch board joined YMCA staff to clean public spaces and distribute coats to those in need, bringing warmth and hope to residents during the winter season.
Comedy for a Cause: In February, Plainfield YMCA brought the community together at the Plainfield Performing Arts Center for a night of comedy and camaraderie. Featuring comedic talents Rich Vos and Monique Latise, the event raised support for essential YMCA programs while uniting 100 attendees in laughter and goodwill.
Honoring Community Heroes: At Greater Somerset County YMCA’s 2024 Spirit Awards, in April, volunteer Ethel Wheeler received the prestigious Active Older Adult Spirit Award. Ethel’s commitment to the YMCA’s Food Security program and her work supporting seniors and families in need embody the heart of Plainfield YMCA’s mission, making her a deserving recipient of this honor, which is awarded to exceptional volunteers.
Prom Night Dreams Come True: In collaboration with the Rotary Club of the Plainfields, Plainfield YMCA provided prom attire for local students at no cost in April, just in time for prom season. Nearly 300 items, including dresses, suits, and accessories, were distributed to ensure students could enjoy their special night with confidence and style.
Recognizing Excellence: In June, Plainfield Mayor Adrian O. Mapp honored the YMCA’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) Program during a City Council meeting. YMCA staff members Jansel Fuentes Jimenez and Sofia Douglas were also recognized at the annual state conference for their dedication to the JAG program’s success.
Launching New Opportunities for Youth: This October, Plainfield YMCA successfully launched its Achievers Program, aimed at equipping students with tools for college and career readiness. With seven students actively participating, the program offers personalized support and skill-building sessions on resume development, public speaking, and financial literacy.
A New Home and a Renewed Vision: As of November, Plainfield YMCA has expanded its operations through a partnership with the duCret School of Art. This collaboration provides additional space for programming, offices, and storage, enabling the YMCA to serve the community better and grow its impact.
Uniting for Change: Plainfield YMCA held a community forum, bringing together residents, community leaders, YMCA staff, and board members to discuss the most pressing issues facing the Plainfield community. The event aimed to foster collaboration, identify key challenges, and explore opportunities for working together to meet local needs.
Fighting Hunger Together: Plainfield YMCA’s Food Security Project provides bi-weekly food and produce bags to families in need on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. Each year, the project distributes over 100 bags per session, supporting thousands of families.
Continuing the Mission: From running a thriving summer camp and school-age childcare program to addressing critical community needs through strategic partnerships, the leadership team of Dave Leveille and Leonardo Gonzalez have been instrumental in fostering connections and ensuring the YMCA remains a vital resource for the Plainfield community.
As 2025 approaches, Plainfield YMCA celebrates these achievements and looks forward to deepening its impact in the year ahead. For more information about Plainfield YMCA programs, partnerships, and opportunities, visit https://www.gscymca.org/locations/plainfield-ymca/.
