Greater Somerset County YMCA’s Saturdays in Motion Kicks Off 33rd Year of Impact
Basking Ridge, New Jersey – September 25, 2024 – Saturdays in Motion, the nation’s longest-running non-public recreational program for children ages 3-17 with autism, is back for its 33rd year at Somerset Hills YMCA, a branch of Greater Somerset County YMCA, and is celebrating its 19th year with Rutgers student athlete volunteers.
On two Saturdays each month, families gather at Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge for two hours of recreation, with children enjoying an hour in the gym followed by an hour in the pool under the care of dedicated teen volunteers. The program is free, open to siblings, and offers a valuable respite for caregivers. Running from fall to spring, Saturdays in Motion (SIM) exemplifies the YMCA’s commitment to inclusivity and support within the community.
Founded by longtime Somerset Hills YMCA members Pat and Art Raynes, Saturdays in Motion remains a volunteer-led initiative that pairs teen mentors one-on-one with children who have special needs. With an average of 75 participants and 85 volunteers per session, the program not only provides recreation but also fosters meaningful connections.
At a recent Labor Day BBQ hosted by Rutgers University, Art Raynes spoke to hundreds of student athletes about the impact made by the Rutgers volunteers, noting, “What is incredible to me, in the 19 years we’ve had Saturdays in Motion volunteers from Rutgers, is the big picture. You have Division I athletes, balancing the demands of their sport and academics, fitting in their personal lives, and traveling all around the country, yet somehow, with all of that, you find time to give back. That’s what I find extraordinary.” He concluded by saying, “When you come to Saturdays in Motion, you’re making a difference. Sometimes it’s a big difference, sometimes it’s a small one. But you’re making a difference!”
The positive impact of Saturdays in Motion resonates deeply with its participants. Michelle Waldman, a parent who attended the first session of the 2024/2025 program with her family, shared, “I’m so grateful to have found SIM. My kids really enjoyed the group and keep asking when the next one will be. The volunteers truly engage and encourage each child to try new things and feel included.”
