Here’s what’s currently underway:
- New infrastructure is being installed, including plumbing, mechanical systems, HVAC, and electrical to support the redesigned areas of the Y.
- Framing of the new layout is progressing steadily.
- Windows for new spaces have been cut and are now being prepped for installation, bringing more natural light into the building.
- Additional exterior improvements are beginning soon, including updated exterior walls and replacing the damaged Y sign.
We’re thrilled to see this vision taking shape and can’t wait to welcome you into the new and improved Somerville YMCA this fall!
As a reminder, the full project’s scope includes the following updates and additions:
- Upper Level:
- Construction of six new classrooms and bathrooms.
- Lower Level:
- A brand-new, relocated Welcome Center
- New offices for YMCA staff
- A new program space
- A new conference room/multi-purpose space
- Elevator installation
- Entrance ramp regraded for improved accessibility
- Upgraded electrical and plumbing infrastructure to support the expanded facility
Friendly Reminders:
- Noise and Disruption: Construction activities may result in increased noise levels and some dust. We recommend bringing headphones to help minimize any discomfort when using the Wellness Center.
- Ear Plugs Available: If you forget your headphones or find the noise levels uncomfortable, our Membership Team will have ear plugs on hand for your convenience.
- Temporary Entrance Relocation: The Welcome Desk will remain at the Gym Back Entrance (off W. Spring Street) for the time being.
-
Parking Updates: Temporary handicap parking is available in the back lot on W. Spring Street. During peak hours, street parking may be required—please plan accordingly.
- Accessibility Considerations: All available entrances will require the use of stairs during construction. If that poses challenges, your Greater Somerset County YMCA membership grants you access to additional nearby branches, where you can utilize the wellness centers, pools, and attend classes:
- Somerset Hills YMCA
- Hillsorough YMCA
- Bridgewater YMCA
- Princeton YMCA
Program and Facility Considerations During Construction
- The Wellness Center, locker rooms, and pool will remain open.
- Gymnastics and swim teams will continue as scheduled.
- Aqua group exercise classes will continue as scheduled.
- Kids Corner will be temporarily unavailable during this transition.
- Modifications to Group Ex Classes: Classes will be relocated to the gymnasium or wellness center, moved to Bridgewater YMCA, or temporarily paused.
